James's Transformative Touch: How One Multi-Skilled Operative is Making a Difference

September 12, 2024

At  Salvation Army Homes, we are always exploring new ways to enhance our services and create better outcomes for residents. Recently, we introduced a pilot role for a multi-skilled operative, and the results have been truly impressive. Leading the charge in this role is James, whose work is already making an  impact across our housing services. A multi-skilled operative is an individual who possesses a wide range of skills, allowing them to tackle various tasks without the need for multiple contractors.

James recently took on a challenging project at our Culverlands service. The communal residents’ lounge, a central hub for social interaction and community activities, was in dire need of a revamp. From the plaster on the walls to the tired decor, the space needed a complete makeover. Instead of relying on multiple contractors, we entrusted the entire project to James.

In just five days, James  transformed the lounge. His work spanned from plastering and painting to adding thoughtful finishing touches that brought warmth and comfort to the space. The result is a welcoming and vibrant lounge that residents are excited to use—a place they can truly call their own.

What’s particularly noteworthy is how James’s approach saved both time and money. By carrying out all the work himself, James minimised disruption for the residents and eliminated the need for external contractors. His efficiency not only sped up the project but also allowed us to maximise our resources.

While this role is still in its pilot phase, James’s work highlights the potential benefits of having a multi-skilled operative on board. His ability to handle diverse tasks with precision and care is a real asset, and the positive feedback speaks volumes about the impact he’s making.

This pilot demonstrates our commitment to finding innovative ways to support our communities and make a difference in the lives of residents. James's work is an example of how a different approach can create positive change, and we look forward to seeing how this role continues to evolve.
